Tinubu warns that, the opposition is preparing to cut short his swearing-in
Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the president-elect, has expressed concern over attempts by some enraged partisans to scuttle the transition process, notably his anticipated swearing-in on May 29.
Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party and Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party were both cautioned by Tinubu against taking to the streets while also pursuing their legal claims in court in a statement by his director of public affairs and minister of state for labor and employment, Mr. Festus Keyamo SAN.
The President-elect remarked that individuals who have flocked to the streets to protest against his mandate are fixated on establishing an Interim National Government (ING) in the statement released on Saturday in Abuja.
We have observed with great concern the deplorable efforts of some people and groups that want to stifle our democracy, the statement says in part.
"These people have remained irate because Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu was named the victor of the 2023 General Elections for reasons that are best known to them. Unfortunately, these ignorant people have repeatedly demanded that either the results be thrown out or that the President-elect not be sworn in on May 29, 2023.
We want to stress once more that these opinions do not align with either our electoral rules or our constitutional provisions. We would have dismissed these as mere wishful thinking, but given how they might affect public safety and order, we felt it was necessary, if not advantageous, to bring them to order.
The motivations behind individuals who committed these treasonous and subversive activities are known to us. Also, we are aware of individuals complicit in the numerous schemes being developed to undermine democracy in general and the transition specifically. They are obsessed with an interim administration. They have attempted to do so in our nation before, which resulted in catastrophes that could have been avoided for years. They are determined to undermine the incoming administration. Some have openly urged for military takeover and made treasonous hints. They are fervently trying to stir the populace against the incoming government for these reasons.
The desire of those opposing the results to be on the streets and in court at the same time is puzzling. The President-elect and Vice-President-inauguration, elect's on the other hand, should be cut short if such is their aim. It is encouraging to see that the President has started the process for making the swearing-in ceremonies a reality. In this sense, the Presidential Transition Council has maintained its direction and adherence to its mandate with regard to planning a smooth transition.
"He has promised to treat everyone fairly in all of his current and future obligations. He has categorically indicated that he would not treat people unfairly based on their support for him or their lack of support. This is both patriotic and stately. We all followed the President-elect during his eight years as Lagos's governor. He never made fun of anyone or any group. He promoted policies that put people first. He is a well-known pacifist and welfare advocate. This is made much more apparent by the fact that millions of voters supported him in the election.
Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Senator Kashim Shettima have been declared winners and have the legal right to be sworn in as officials in accordance with the law and as we have done since 1999. Those who feel differently are free to seek legal redress in court. Why should their circumstance be unique compared to how we have been operating since 1999?
"Anyone who disagree with the proclamation shall act in accordance with the law's guidelines. No matter how frustrated some losers are currently acting, Nigeria is not a lawless country and should not be portrayed as such.
People who fuel hatred, division, and lies should stop doing so. They should also stop spreading false information via some tainted media outlets. It resembles campaigning following elections. At this point, hate speech, fake news, and propaganda are pointless since Nigerians have already made their decision. Those who are determined to thwart the process will start a fire of devastation and flee. But, they shouldn't even begin.
"What we want is for there to be peace in this nation. It is absurd that certain people, who ought to know better, would advocate for violence and be so adamant about doing so.
We will cooperate together with the security authorities to identify these individuals and their sponsors both inside and outside of Nigeria, seize them, and bring them to justice. We are worried that common Nigerians who are uninformed of the bad intentions of these people would not be exploited as human shields. It's time to stop. They should immediately stop daring us with their constant tenacity. Our powers and abilities are not lacking. Please don't mistake our quiet for cowardice. For the sake of the peace in our cherished nation, let us unite. Keyamo continued, "It is better.
